BookExpo America is North America's largest gathering of book trade professionals in North America attracting an international audience. The concurrent event, New York Book Week, includes public "main stage" author programs. Italy's presence at both provides a unique opportunity to peruse the latest books and media products as well as to meet and listen to new and well known Italian authors and literary characters.

BookExpo America (www.bookexpoamerica.com) is North America's largest gathering of book trade professionals attracting an international audience. It is organized with the support of association partners including the Association of American Publishers (AAP) and the American Booksellers Association (ABA). BEA is recognized for the media attention it brings to upcoming books as well as for the notable authors it attracts to the convention itself. The concurrent event, New York Book Week, includes public "main stage" author programs as well as smaller events at libraries in the NYPL system and chain and independent bookstores throughout New York City and its boroughs. New York Book Week embraces all literary and book activity, and expands the awareness of authors, books and publishing.

At the 2012 edition there were 2,200 international journalists, more than 600 author signings, 1,657 exhibitors from 25 countries and 22,365 visitors from 95 countries.

Italy's presence (www.italbooks.com) at both provides a unique opportunity to peruse the latest from arts books to children's books and media products as well as to meet and listen to Italian authors and literary characters.

Words on screen – New Italian Literature into Film

 

ANICA and AIE, with the support of the Ministry for Economic Development, bring “Words on Screen – New Italian Literature into Film” to New York, to promote Italian film production and publishing industries. The guests of the initiative include director Salvatore Mereu and writers Nicolai Lilin and Simone Lenzi

ANICA (Italian Association of Cinematographic Audiovisual and Multimedia Industries) and AIE (Italian Publisher Association)  will present their event “Words on Screen. New Italian Literature into Film” in New York, with the goal of promoting Italian film production and publishing industries as part of the “2013 Year of Italian Culture in the United States” project. The programme of events, made possible by the support of the Ministry for Economic Development and organized in collaboration with the Fondazione Cinema per Roma, will feature screenings for the public of films inspired by Italian novels, debates  and meetings with directors, producers, writers and editors.

 

The goal is to reinforce the presence of the Italian film and book publishing industries on the American market.  On June 3rd there will be a meeting on the film Bellas Mariposas, inspired by the novel of the same name by Sergio Atzeni published by Sellerio. The guests will be director Salvatore Mereu and producer Cecilia Valmarana. A second debate will feature the producer Mario Gianani and Kylee Doust, the translator of the novel Io e te by Niccolò Ammaniti, published by Einaudi Stile Libero (published in English with the title Me and You by Black Cat, Tra edition), from which Bernardo Bertolucci adapted his film Io e te, which will be screened before the debate. On June 4th there will be an interview with Simone Lenzi, author of the book La generazione, published by Baldini Castoldi Dalai, from which Paolo Virzì adapted the film Tutti i santi giorni, together with producer Cecilia Valmarana. Finally, there will be a screening of Siberian Education by Gabriele Salvatores, which will be followed by a meeting with Nicolai Lilin, author of the novel EducazioneSiberiana published by Giulio Einaudi editore, and with Gina Gardini for the Cattleya production company.

The encounters will be moderated by the journalist and writer Antonio Monda.

A conversation with the authors of the novels selected as finalists for the 2013 edition of  the Premio Strega that includes Los Angeles as the only USA location for one of its readers Committes around the world.

 

The prestigious Premio Strega is an Award presented in Rome every year in the month of July
In addition to the main Italian jury, there are also readers’ committees around the world, and since 2011 one in Los Angeles, coordianted by the Italian Cultural Institute.  

In 1947 Maria and Goffredo Bellonci started to host a literary salon at their home in Rome.
These Sunday gatherings of writers, artists and intellectuals grew to include many of the most
notable figures of Italian cultural life. Winners have included Alberto Moravia, Elsa Morante, Natalia Ginzburg, Primo Levi, Umberto Eco , and Caludio Magris.
